President's Award of Excellence - Honorable Steven P. Logan was sworn in as a United States District Judge for the District of Arizona on May 16, 2014. The United States Senate, on May 14, 2014, voted 96-0 for his confirmation. President Barack Obama nominated Judge Logan for this post on September 19, 2013. He received support from both of his home state Senators, John McCain and Jeff Flake. He is the first ever African American federal district judge in Phoenix, Arizona. Judge Logan has also worked as a United States Magistrate Judge, United States Immigration Judge, and as an Assistant United States Attorney. For the past 25 years, he has also served on active duty and in the reserves as a Judge Advocate in the United States Marine Corps. Growing up, Judge Logan traveled across the United States and the world as the son of a United States Army soldier. He attended public schools, graduating from North Hardin High School in Radcliff, Kentucky in 1984, where he earned an Academic Scholarship. He attended the University of Louisville, majored in Criminal Justice, and graduated in 1988. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma, College of Law in 1992. As a United States Marine Corps Reserves Colonel, Judge Logan currently serves as an Appellate Judge on the Navy and Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals in Washington, District of Columbia. While serving in the United States Marine Corps Reserves, Judge Logan was mobilized and recalled to active duty to serve two tours of duty in Iraq and one tour of duty in Afghanistan. Judge Logan was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Combat Action Ribbon for his service in Iraq in 2008. Judge Logan lives in Phoenix with his wife, Raynette Logan, an attorney, and they have four children.
