A prosecutor’s discretion is to be protected, and should only be overridden by the voters. NBPA joined the legal community in a letter opposing the Florida governor’s actions.
The NBA also joined forces with the NBPA to support Ms. Ayala.

Our very own, Audrey Moore (the brains and muscle behind the NBPA Annual Job Fair) is a 2018 recipient of the Thomas E. Dewey Medal, awarded by the New York City Bar Association for her outstanding work with the New York County District Attorney’s Office (Manhattan District Attorney’s Office).
Ms. Moore has been a dedicated prosecutor since 1989, and currently serves as Executive Assistant District Attorney, Chief Diversity Officer and Chief of the Special Victims Bureau. A faithful public servant, she is also dedicated to diversity and mentorship. Ms. Moore is a founding member of the Manhattan District Attorney Office’s Legal Hiring Board’s Diversity Outreach Committee and was co-Chair of the Mentoring Committee.
The Thomas E. Dewey medal is presented annually to an outstanding Assistant District Attorney in each of the City’s District Attorney’s offices, and in the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor.
Among prosecutors in New York County, Thomas E. Dewey is remembered as having ushered in the era in which the District Attorney’s office has been staffed by professional prosecutors chosen on merit rather than through political patronage. Dewey first came to the public’s attention as a prosecutor in the 1930’s, instituting successful criminal proceedings against gangsters, bootleggers and organized crime figures or the day.
Ms. Moore previously received this honor in 2007.
Richmond County (Staten Island District Attorney’s Office) awardee Thomas Ridges has attended multiple NBPA Conferences/Job Fairs, having regularly recruited Assistant District Attorneys for the Staten Island District Attorney’s Office.

The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) seeks the support of current or former prosecutors to provide technical expertise to relevant, ongoing and future international programs as part of the ABA ROLI Pro Bono Legal Specialist Program.
ABA ROLI represents the international development wing of the American Bar Association, and seeks to promote justice, economic opportunity and human dignity through the rule of law in developing countries. Since 1990 more than 5,000 volunteers—judges, attorneys, law professors and legal specialists—have contributed more than $200 million in pro bono assistance to promoting the rule of law throughout the world. The pro bono support of prosecutors, in particular, has been invaluable to the implementation of ABA ROLI programs geared towards prosecutorial education, justice sector capacity-building, and other thematic program areas.
In order to capture and retain the contact information and professional profiles of interested attorneys, we have designed this survey specifically for current or former prosecutors, with at least five years of practical experience, to assist us in matching a skill set with a specific assignment. There are a few things to keep in mind, however, before completing this survey. Firstly, pro bono opportunities are very specialized, and limited in number. Interested candidates will undergo an interview process to be considered for a given assignment, as openings occur. Completion of this survey does not, therefore, result in an immediate assignment. Secondly, ABA ROLI’s need for certain expertise may materialize on short notice, so you may be contacted with an urgent request for an assignment. Thirdly, this information will be kept entirely confidential and stored in ABA ROLI’s secure Experts Database. Participants will be contacted in the event that there is an opening that they could be well-suited for.

A New York Times article dated July 7, 2015, reveals recent data indicating that 95% of elected prosecutors are white. The study focused on state level prosecutors, and did not discuss the federal system. The NBPA is steadfast in our mission to retain and advance African Americans in the field of prosecution. We acknowledge the successes of our elected African American prosecutors who inspire us daily, as we groom more prosecutors to follow their lead.
The NBPA Mourns the Loss of Former Attorney General and Miami State Attorney Janet Reno
It is with a heavy heart with which I inform the membership that NBPA Past President Richard Mangum has passed away after a lengthy illness. He served as our organization’s President from 1994 – 1997. A career prosecutor in New York, Mr. Mangum was an Assistant District Attorney in the Queens County District Attorney’s Office from 1982 until 1985. He later served in the Office of the Special Prosecutor for Criminal Justice, and retired as an Executive Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx District Attorney’s Office. Please join us in extending our condolences to his wife Karol, also a retired fellow prosecutor and member of our NBPA family, and the rest of his loving family.
